Your Voice Needs to Be Heard
in order for changes to be made!

Now is the time to ACT!  We need everyone to blanket Albany with letters, visit Representatives in their home district and make phone calls. Over the next few weeks your letters, voices and visits will count more than ever as the legislature finalizes the NYS budget. In order to make our voices heard we need you to do one or more of the following:

1.       Have as many individuals connected with your program (i.e. staff, board members, alumni association members) send letters to their legislators asking them to support the field by sending a letter to Speaker Shelly Silver in the Assembly or Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno in the Senate to support OASAS alcoholism and substance abuse prevention and treatment programs. Get a commitment from them to send the letter and to give you a copy. If you don’t know your legislator CLICK HERE to find out.

A sample letter addressing budget concerns are attached, it is important that you individualize your letter speaking to your concerns and issues as a constituent. In order that we may track letters we ask that you please contact the ASAP office with the number and copies, if possible, of letters sent.

2.       Visit your legislator in their district office or have them visit your program. Meeting with your representative, or a staff person, in the home district connects you with the legislator and conveys a message of the importance of these issues. This year we are trying to ensure that all New York State Legislators either visit a program or are visited in their home district. Please contact ASAP to let us know who you have met with as we want to be sure that all Legislators are visited.

3.       Writing and visiting have the strongest impact with Legislators. Make sure you follow up your visit with a phone call thanking them for their support. If you can’t write or visit, please take a moment and make a phone call. It does not have as much impact as a letter or visit, but still sends the message.

Dear Senator (Last Name):                         Dear Assemblyperson (Last Name):

In this difficult budget time it makes sense to invest in services that save both lives and money in New York State. As a constituent in your district, I urge you to support OASAS treatment and prevention programs and ask that you send a letter to [Speaker Sheldon Silver (Assembly)] or [Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno (Senate)] asking that they:

  • Restore $6.2 million cut to OASAS.
  • Maintain TANF funding for substance abuse prevention and treatment services for children and families engaged in the Child Welfare System ($18 million) and support the welfare-to-work substance abuse prevention initiative ($10 million).
  • Maintain $5 million in funding for adolescent treatment.

Thank you for your time and consideration of my request. I look forward to hearing from you and would appreciate a copy of your letter to the [Speaker or Majority Leader].

Thank you,
