The New York State Practice Improvement Collaborative [PIC] is a state endorsed, provider-driven consortium of research and provider organizations committed :

1.      to improving clinical outcomes in alcohol and substance abuse treatment and prevention programs through the use of evidence-based practices;

2.      to improving the conduct of research through practitioner involvement; and

3.      to influencing policy as it effects research and practice at the local, state and national levels. 

The PRC is comprised of a statewide advisory group, The Practice Research Collaborative, and seven regional consortia, The Practice Research Networks.

 The New York State Practice Improvement Collaborative [PIC] is a consortium comprised of state policy-makers from the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, Department of Health, Office of Mental Health and representatives from the Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Providers of New York State, community-based alcoholism and substance abuse treatment and prevention providers, academic institutions, research organizations, the Northeastern States Addiction Technology Transfer Center, the Institute for Professional Development in the Addictions and consumers.  Each of the seven regional Practice Research Networks [PRNs] are represented on the PIC to ensure the articulation and incorporation of regional issues into the statewide practice research agenda.  The PIC utilizes a model of consensus driven decision-making and includes the following three standing committees: membership, research application and grants development.

 

The PIC Advisory Group meets quarterly and functions in an advisory capacity to the Project Management Team which administers the overall initiative.  The Project Management Team consists of representatives from the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services and the Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Provider Association of New York.  The Project Management Team coordinates the activities of both the statewide PIC and the regional PRNs, that have been reviewed and approved, by consensus, by the PIC dvisory Group.

guiding principles

All research to practice implementation activities conducted to fulfill the Mission of the Practice Improvement Collaborative will incorporate the following principles:

inclusive: The Practice Improvement Collaborative will invite and facilitate participation from all interested persons including alcohol and substance abuse treatment and prevention providers, researchers, policymakers, academicians, consumers and other stakeholders.

 

communication: The Practice Improvement Collaborative will emphasize multi-directional communication among all participants through the utilization of multi-mediums including the internet and distance learning technologies as well as traditional methods.

 

resources: The Practice Improvement Collaborative will maximize the use of both existing organizational resources and knowledge application protocols for the effective dissemination of information and facilitation of organizational change.

 

cultural diversity: The Practice Improvement Collaborative will promote dissemination strategies, research methodologies and services that recognize, respect and respond to all aspects of cultural diversity including the demographic, ethnic and normative characteristics of each participant group.

 

research: The Practice Improvement Collaborative will utilize research based upon good science to implement its practice research agenda and to inform policymakers, stakeholders and the public of evidence-based strategies to facilitate changes in public policy affecting the delivery and effectiveness of services.

 

commitment: The Practice Improvement Collaborative will develop an operations plan that addresses the recruitment and support of new members and the institutionalization of activities beyond  of the grant period.

Membership on the New York State Practice Improvement Collaborative [PIC] reflects a commitment by participants to both support the Mission and Guiding Principles of the PIC, and to fulfill the following:

  • attend regular meetings of the PIC;

  • develop and endorse a prioritized statewide practice research agenda;

  • promote and participate in PIC endorsed research activities;

  • review and monitor the implementation of the statewide research agenda; and

  • be accessible to other PIC and PRN members for the purposes of consultation regarding implementation of practice research activities.

As a member of the New York State Practice Improvement Collaborative, you will be joining a community of providers, researchers, consumers, policymakers and other stakeholders of substance abuse services who are committed to improving the effectiveness of substance abuse services in New York State.  Specific benefits include:

  •  Participation in identifying and defining the priorities for research and development efforts;

  •  Participation in the conceptualization, development, and implementation of funded research and evaluation initiatives to study effective substance abuse treatment and prevention;

  • Gaining a greater understanding of state-of-the-art substance abuse treatment and prevention initiatives;

  • Access to a statewide listserv to exchange information about substance abuse issues and resources;

  • Opportunities to network with others in the substance abuse community;

  • With supervisory documentation, your participation at PIC/PRN meetings and related functions is considered an approved professional development activity for CASAC recredentialling clock hours.

member roles/responsibilities

Membership on one of the seven regional Practice Research Networks [PRNs] reflects a commitment by participants to both support the Mission and Guiding Principles of the PIC, and to fulfill the following:

  •  attend regularly scheduled meetings of the PRN;

  •  identify a representative(s) to attend statewide PIC meetings;

  • demonstrate a willingness to work collaboratively with both researchers and practitioners on PIC endorsed activities;

  •  participate in the conceptualization, development and implementation of regional collaborative initiatives; and

  • collaborate with other PRN members and the PIC in pursuit of external funding opportunities.
