Since 2012, NYCB has proudly certified peer professionals who provide valuable support to individuals in or seeking recovery from substance use disorders.

Certification is a voluntary undertaking. Candidates apply for role-based certification to confirm their credibility as competent, non-clinical professionals. Candidates demonstrate that competence and ethical practice through completing approved role training, attesting to the binding NYCB Code of Ethical Conduct, and meeting all other application requirements. This credibility is valued by a wide variety of stakeholders, including potential employers and business partners, colleagues and clients, and the general public.

Certification is not a license. It is not a character reference, nor a guarantee of employment. Certification simply confirms competence in the certified role per approved role training, confirmed field experience in the role, and a passing grade in the exam. The peer recovery profession is not a licensed profession.

Information for all certification candidates:

  • Certification applications must be submitted through Certemy.
  • Incomplete applications or those submitted without payment will not be reviewed.
  • Application fees are non-refundable, without exception, and do not guarantee approval.
  • The review process may take up to four (4) weeks.
  • Candidates must adhere to the NYCB Code of Ethical Conduct at the time of application.
  • For all certifications except CRPA-Provisional, renewal applications must be submitted in Certemy at least 45 days before the expiration date to avoid late fees.
  • CRPA-Provisional is a one-time-only certification, valid for 2 years (24 months), and cannot be renewed or extended.
